Definition
The process capability index cp is a measurement of the smallest possible fraction of nonconforming units. The fraction results from an optimal position of the distribution of the characteristic values (centralized production). This value does not indicate whether the distribution of the characteristic values is optimal.
For characteristic values with a normal distribution, the following formula is used in the calculation:
cp = (USL - LSL) / 6*s
USL and LSL are the limits of the tolerance area and s is the estimated value for the standard deviation of the value distribution.
Note
If there is neither a master inspection characteristic, nor an inspection characteristic in the drill-down, the cp value does not have an influence. In such a case, the system issues asterisks (***) instead of the cp value. Similarly, if there are no tolerance limits, the system issues asterisks (***) instead of the cp value.
