Definition

The update group is a control element within the update definition. This control element enables different business events in the various applications to influence the update of statistical information in the Logistics Information System (LIS).

To use this control element, you assign an update group to each business event or group of business events within an application. These update groups determine the fields that are created for the statistical information.

The type of assignment and the specific organizational elements vary from application to application.

Use

You can currently use the update group to influence the update of statistical information in the following applications (information systems):

  • Sales and Distribution
  • Purchasing
  • Plant Maintenance
  • Quality Management
  • External data

For all other information systems within Logistics, you must use a fixed update group.

All update groups that begin with digits, or the letter "S" are included in the SAP name range.

Example

In sales and distribution processing, the following elements determine the update group:

  • The sales organization
  • The distribution channel
  • The division
  • A group of customers
  • A group of material
  • The sales document type
  • The item category

In sales and distribution processing, a distinction is made between business types, such as "normal" sales and "returns". These business types are identified by different sales document types.

In an information structure, you want to save the order quantities from the different business types in different statistical fields. You want only the statistical fields corresponding to the "normal" sale to be updated when a normal sale is made, not the statistical fields that accumulate the quantities for the returns, and vice versa.

To control the update of these different events, you use different update groups.

For example, assign the update group "000001" to the sales document types that are used for "normal" sales.

You then assign update group "000002" to the sales document types that are used for returns processing.

If you define the update rules for the key figures in an information structure, make sure that you define the rules with reference to an update group.

If you define the update rule for your information structure with reference to the update group "000001", you are only defining the key figures that are to be updated for "normal" sales.

Conversely, by using update group "000002", you are only defining the key figures that are to be updated for the returns operations.

To update the key figures for both business events, assign both update groups to the key figures, when you define the update rules.
