It is possible to execute picking and material staging in WM with reference to the reference document (transfer requirement or delivery) either individually or in multiple processing. In individual processing, the picking process is always executed with respect to a requirement and can be optimized to a limited degree only in WM.
However, if the picking process is executed as a multiple processing run, it can be optimized using several criteria. 2-step picking can be used as one of the optimization options within a multiple processing run.
Using the 2-step picking procedure, you can divide the entire picking process into removal of a cumulative quantity and its allocation to individual requirements (reference documents). With the removal of cumulative quantities, the stock removal process can be optimized to a greater degree.
Example
The deliveries are picked on a truck basis. All deliveries that are supplied by truck delivery are picked together in one picking process and made ready for dispatch in the picked items zone. These are several deliveries in small quantities and bulky materials. The share of bulky materials is small. These are removed directly from the warehouse on a delivery-related basis. All other materials are picked using the 2-step picking method. Large quantities are taken from the warehouse and provided for picking. In this way, the stock removal process is optimized and the larger part of the picking work is moved to the material staging area.
All deliveries for a truck or a transport are grouped together using a group number. All materials, with the exception of bulky materials, are activated for 2-step picking. The small quantities of all deliveries belonging to a group are taken from the warehouse as an accumulated quantity and brought to the material staging area. As soon as the entire picking process is complete, it is possible to start with picking of the individual deliveries. A transfer order is created for each delivery and then split into items that are picked directly from the warehouse (bulky material) and items that have already been provided in material staging. As soon as all items are picked and ready for dispatch, the entire delivery is packed.
Requirements
To be able to implement the 2-step picking process, you need to use the group number. The group number defines a multiple-processing run that groups several reference documents (transfer requirements or deliveries) together.
Standard settings
In the SAP standard system, 2-step picking is not activated in warehouse number 001.
- In warehouse number 001, storage type 200 is defined as an interim zone and movement type 850 is defined for stock removals.
- In the storage type search, storage type 200 is defined for 2-step picking.
Recommendation
Activities
The activation and control of 2-step picking takes place for deliveries at warehouse number level.
Set the required parameters for 2-step picking in the specified sequence:
- Activate 2-step picking for the deliveries in a warehouse number.
- Define whether 2-step picking is to take place on a material-dependent basis. If you have material-dependent control, you must define the relevance of the material for each warehouse number in the material master.
- Decide whether 2-step picking is to be redefined when a reference number is created. The process of determining 2-step picking, that is, the check for relevance of 2-step picking for the individual materials to be picked, takes place in the individual reference documents already when the documents are created. The items relevant for 2-step picking are marked accordingly in the reference documents. When the reference number is created, the determination of 2-step picking is no longer necessary. For more information on determining 2-step picking, refer to the field documentation.
- For materials that are picked using the 2-step procedure, there is a separate procedure "2". With this procedure, the destination storage type is defined for the stock removal and this storage type is also defined as the source storage type for the allocation of the materials.
If the interim zone is changed for 2-level picking, or if the storage type determination is enhanced to suit customer-specific needs, the storage type search for 2-step picking must be adapted.
For more information on this topic, refer to the chapter "Activate storage type search".
Further notes
The activation of the 2-step picking process for transfer requirements is executed in a separate step independently of the deliveries. For more information on this step, refer to the chapter "Set up 2-step picking for transfer requirements".
The standard system provides material-related control for 2-step picking. For customer-specific requirements, you can use the user exit MWM2S001. For more information on this, refer to the documentation of this user exit.
For the interim storage area that is used as the destination storage type for the stock removal and also used as the source storage type for the allocation of the materials, stock removal (picking) strategy R is suitable. Using this strategy, the system generates a dynamic storage bin with the same number as the reference number in the interim zone.
