In this step, you define supplementary
units of measurement and
units of measure for quality management purposes.

Activities

  1. Units of measurement

  • The units of measurement are managed centrally in the SAP system for all applications and are usually maintained in the global settings. From a quality management standpoint, you may need to supplement the predefined units of measurement, in order to:
    • Display measured values in a meaningful form.
    • Have additional sample units of measure available.
    • Represent inspection lot quantities as the number of containers and the lot container.
    • Define units of measurement for defect valuation purposes.

Check whether the units of measurement required in QM exist and are correctly defined.

  1. Units of measure groups for materials.

You can use different units of measure to represent the quantity of a material. To simplify the maintenance of the material master records, you can predefine units of measure groups together with their respective conversion factors for the base unit of measure.

  2. Define additional physical dimensions and units of measure in the system.

Check whether the predefined units of measure groups required to maintain the material master records are completely and correctly defined.

Further notes

100% inspection

In a 100% inspection, the number of decimal places in the sample unit of measure plays an important role: This is the case if no sampling procedure is being used. This means one of the following:

  • You define a 100% inspection.
  • You do not define a sampling procedure for the inspection characteristic.
  • The sample size that was determined from the sampling procedure is greater than the lot size and is therefore limited to the lot size.

The system then reverts to accessing special sample determination rules with the following results:

  • If the sample unit of measure has decimal places, the sample size is always 1, this means that the sample quantity is equal to 1 sample unit of measure.
  • If the sample unit of measure has no decimal places, 100% of the lot size in sample units of measure (rounded up) has to be inspected.

You can also have a 100% inspection, if you use a sampling procedure with the sampling type 100% inspection, or inspect with a percentage sampling procedure and define the inspection scope as 100%. In the latter case, the inspection scope is independent of the number of decimal places and is 100% of the lot size, measured in sample units of measure.

Share of scrap in the inspection lot
In an inspection without the recording of characteristic values, the share of scrap in the inspection lot is only determined, if the unit of measure in the inspection lot has no decimal places.

Physical-sample container for the physical sample
In the sample-drawing procedure you can enter a physical-sample container for each sample-drawing item and sample type. This physical-sample container is used for drawing physical samples and is displayed in the physical-sample record. The physical-sample container is not connected with the lot containers in the inspection lot. You define physical-sample containers in the Quality Inspection, Sample Management section of the Implementation Guide.
