Definition
Alphanumeric key which allows the systematic inclusion of the PRODCOM number in the classification of branches of industry.
In order to harmonize company statistics in the member states of the European Union (EU), the Council created EWG regulation no. 3037/90 on October 10, 1990, concerning the statistical procedure used by branches of industry within the EU (EU, No. L293, p.1). The Commission changed this regulation with the EWG regulation no. 761/93 on March 24, 1993 (EU, No. L83 p.1) (NACE regulation). This is a legal regulation which obliges the member states of the EU to standardize their classifications.
In Germany, this regulation has led to the "Klassifikation der Wirtschaftszweige, issue 1993 (WZ93)" (classification of branches of industry).
