Definition

The functional area enables an enterprise to be grouped according to functional aspects, for example:

• Administration
• Sales and Distribution
• Research and Development

Use

The functional area is required to create a profit and loss statement based on the cost-of-sales accounting.

The operating expenses that cannot be directly attributed to the sales are distributed to functional areas. The functional grouping into Production, Sales and Distribution, and Administration shows the cost-of -sales accounting why costs occurred and thereby displays the economic purpose of the expense.

Using the substitution, the functional area is transferred to the financial accounting and controlling documents.

In controlling, you can make evaluations according to functional areas using the reconciliation ledger.
