Definition

The tick (or minimum price movement) is the smallest unit by which a price can change.

In the case of commodity-based futures and listed options, the tick should not be read as a currency-related amount, but rather as an amount or unit of measure, in the same way as the futures quotation.

The traded futures price is always a multiple of the tick/minimum price movement.

Example

Relationship between the tick amount and the tick value:

The London Metal Exchange (LME) trades copper futures. The following applies to Grade A copper futures contracts:

  • Lot Size = 25 metric tonnes

This is entered in the futures class data (transaction FWZZ) on the Basic Data tab page in the Contract Size field in the Underlying area.

  • Quotation = USD / Tonne

This entry is defined as the unit of measure of the contract size in the Currency field (USD) in the Tick area and the UoM field (tonne). These fields are on the Basic Data tab page in the futures class data (transaction FWZZ).

  • Tick = 0.01

This entry corresponds to the tick amount (Amount field in the Tick area) which is on the Basic Data tab page in the futures class data (transaction FWZZ).

  • Tick value = USD 0.25

This entry corresponds to the tick value (Value field in the Tick area) which is on the Basic Data tab page in the futures class data (transaction FWZZ).

If you purchase x units of the future, the contract value is as follows:

Contract value = Number of units * (Rate/Tick) * Tick value
