Definition
The differences between an external and internal correspondence type are in correspondence control, confirmation status and output media. Control: If settings have been made in Customizing 'Define correspondence activities', internal correspondence types can be output. No more settings are necessary for internal correspondence types. For external correspondence, you must also maintain the correspondence standing instructions of the respective businsess partner in addition to the above mentioned Customizing settings. Correspondence is only output if the standing instructions are maintained for the business partner. In the case of external correspondence, the confirmation status (outgoing side) is managed in the transaction. If the counterconfirmation status is also to be managed, you must cross the 'Counterconfirmation required' checkbox in Customizing 'Define correspondence activities'. The 'Counterconfirmation' checkbox must also crossed in the standing instructions of the business partner. Internal correspondence can only be printed out. There are other options for external correspondence such as fax, e-mail, etc.
