Definition

Agreed special characters whose interpretation differs depending on on their usage.

Note that if you change a single default character, you have to enter all the characters. As soon as you enter a character that is not a blank, all of the subsequent default values are overwritten with the specifications in this field.

SAP-HCM message format:

Currently has no meaning.

HL7 message format:

1st position: field separator (default |);
2nd position: component separator (default ^);
3rd position: repetition separator (default ~);
4th position: special escape character (default \);
5th position: subcomponent separator (default &).

DE: Agreements according to §301 and §301 SGB V:

1st position: field separator within data elements (default :);
2nd position: data element separator (default +);
3rd position: decimal point (default ,);
4th position: special escape character (default ?);
5th position: reserved (default is a blank/an empty space);
6th position: segment end indicator (default ' ).
