Using Selection Variants Instead of Groups
You normally enter individual values or value intervals in groups when you define them. For several objects you can, however, use selection variants instead of groups. You use a selection variant to select master data across one or more master data attributes. For example, you can define a selection variant that contains all cost centers with a particular cost element type.
Enter the .<name of the selection variant> instead of a group name. The system temporarily creates a group that contains all objects selected using this selection variant, such as cost centers. If a new object is created later that is also selected by this selection variant, then this object is automatically contained in the group.
You can use selection variants instead of groups for the following objects:
- Cost center groups: cost center selection variants
- Cost element groups: cost element selection variants
- Order groups: internal order selection variants
- Activity type groups: activity type selection variants
- Business process groups: process selection variants
Note
Note that selection using a selection variant can have a relatively long runtime. Selection always takes place when the selection variant is used instead of a group.
When you execute a report group, you must, for example, reselect the respective objects for each selection variant that is used in the report group. It may be that the system has to search through the master data table for the objects several times to do this.
If you often use particular master data fields in selection variants, you can create a database index based on these fields in order to improve runtime (see: Tips on order selection).
