Definition
The customs tariff specifies whether and how much duty should be paid. A customs tariff consists of two components: the customs nomenclature and the different customs duty rates.
The customs nomenclature lists all goods systematically. Therefore, it is also called a nomenclature of goods. Since January 1988, the Customs Cooperation Council's "Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System" (HS) with its six-digit reference numbers has provided the basis for an internationally valid classification of all goods. The individual economic blocs or countries supplement the six-digit HS code with additional codes.
Example
The "Combined Nomenclature" (CN) is valid throughout the European Union and has eight digits. It corresponds to chapters 1-97 of the nomenclature of goods for foreign trade statistics which contains 21 sections (using Roman numerals), 97 chapters with two-digit numerals and 1242 headings. The standard system contains these sections and chapters in Customizing.
