Definition

It is possible to use variables in place of fixed characteristic values when you define a form or report. The system asks you to replace these variables later.

"Later" here means when you define the report (if you defined the variable in the form) or when you execute the report.

A distinction is made between local and global variables.

A local variable is assigned to a characteristic within the structure and is unique there. You can name it as you wish, or you can use an existing variable for this characteristic. Local variables begin with the variable icon plus "$", followed by three characters (no special characters).

Variables for numeric fields can be + and - operators. The variable can consist of a '+' or '-' and a number of two digits maximum. For example, the variable 'A' may be used in a column for the fiscal year. In the second column, you want to display the previous year. To do so, enter 'A-1' in the characteristic "Fiscal year" The system later asks you to specify fiscal year variable 'A' and then automatically calculates the previous year.

You maintain global variables in Customizing. Global variables are unique within an application. As with local variables, +/- operators can also be included.
