Definition
The process capability index cpk is a measurement of the expected fraction of nonconforming units in the process. The greater the value, the smaller this share.
For characteristic values that follow a normal distribution pattern, the capability index is calculated as follows:
cpk = min(USL - x-bar) (x-bar - LSL) / 3*s
USL and LSL are the upper and lower specification limits of the tolerance range, respectively. s and x-bar are estimations of the expected value and the standard deviation of the original value distribution, respectively.
