Definition

The process capability index cp is a measurement of the smallest possible fraction of nonconforming units in the process that occurs for optimal location of the distribution of the characteristic values. This value does not indicate whether this is the case.

For characteristic values that follow a normal distribution pattern, the capability index is calculated as follows:

cp = (USL - LSL) / 6*s

USL and LSL are the upper and lower specification limits of the tolerance range, respectively. s is an estimation of the standard deviation of the original value distribution.
