Documentation
Definition
Costs arising from the failure to fulfill specified quality requirements. Failure costs can arise from within an organization (internal failure costs) or from outside an organization (external failure costs).
- Internal failure costs can arise during the stages of marketing, design and development, procurement, manufacturing, and installation. These failure costs may include the costs of scrap, rework, reinspection, and retest, and also the consequential losses within the organization.
- External failure costs arise after the delivery of the product to a customer or user. These costs may include the costs of claims against the warranty, replacement, and loss of good will.
Use
Failure costs are treated as estimated costs, which arise when the type of defect defined by the code occurs.
These failure costs are not used for the cost accounting. However, they provide input to the quantitative valuation of the failure results.
