Definition

System in which applications run on a shared data basis.

The distribution of data between systems requires each system in a network to have a unique ID. The logical system is used for this purpose.

The client corresponds to the logical system. In client maintenance, you can assign a logical system to a client (via Goto -> Detail).

The logical system is relevant for the following SAP areas:

  • ALE: Communication takes place between two or more logical systems.
  • ALE business processes (such as Cost Center Accounting): Definition of a system in which a specific application runs. You can only change master data in this system, for example.
  • Workflow object: The logical system is always contained in the key of a workflow object; the system also contains the object.

Note the following when maintaining the logical system:

  • The logical system must be unique company-wide. It cannot be used by any other system in the ALE integrated system.
  • The logical system cannot be changed in the production system. The logical system is used to differentiate between the SCM and ERP systems. If, for example, a document reference is transferred from the ERP system to an APO system, and the APO system uses its own logical system to look for it, the APO system will not find it. This allows the APO system to recognize that the document reference comes from the connected ERP system.
