Definition

Option that uses the standby charge as the basis for an alternative calculation of the employee operating cost benefit.

This alternative calculation method should only be used under the following conditions:

  • the employee uses the automobile more than 50% in the course of their office or employment; and
  • the employee requests (in writing before the end of the year) that this alternative method be used.

Use

The alternative calculation proceeds as follows:

[ (Standby charge + Standby reimbursement) * 50% ] - Operating cost reimbursement

Note

This alternative method may not always be beneficial to employees.
