Definition
The floating average price is a base value for calculating the opportunity volume and the realized and unrealized price gains and losses. It is only relevant for positions.
Every time a purchase alters the position, a new floating average is determined. The procedure also takes into account negative positions which can result from short sales. In this case, the floating average price is adjusted with each sale. If the +/- sign of the position changes due to a purchase/sale, the residual purchase/sale, which, starting from a position of zero, forms the new position with a changed sign, provides the basis for the new floating average calculation.
The floating average can be calculated in various ways:
- As an amount (in position currency), for example for stock positions
- As an exchange rate, for example for currency positions
- As a percentage rate, for example for bonds and debentures
- As an index value, for example for stock index options
- As an effective interest rate, for example for zero bonds
In the case of positions that consist of a single flow, the floating average is identical to the purchase or sale price of the flow.
