Outbound IDocs:
The reference number in the control record is updated when the respective status record has been received. References which may have been saved beforehand are overwritten with the last value.

Inbound IDocs:
No action required.

EDI subsystem

Outbound IDocs:
The reference number is passed to the SAP System with one of the status records. The last reference number is always stored with the IDoc.
