You define the unit referred to as piece by means of an environment parameter in Customizing for Formulas.

To convert mass or volume into piece, the system uses a factor stored in the property tree of the specification. You also define this property by means of an environment parameter.

If you have specified both a factor for converting volume to piece and for converting mass to piece, the factor for mass to piece takes precedence and is also used for calculating the volume.
