Definition
Wordwide standardized number to uniquely identify a specific material. There are separate numbers for each unit of measure or pack unit.
Usually the International Article Number (EAN) is issued by the material manufacturer. The EAN therefore allows the manufacturer to be uniquely identified.
A company can also issue EANs based on different types of instore- numbering methods. The instore-EAN is only known to the company issuing it.
The EAN corresponds to the American Universal Product Code (UPC)
