Definition
Codepages and character sets in some countries and fonts contain characters that are superimposed on each other and not written side by side.
Example 1: Thai
In Thai, vowels are usually written on top of the consonants. Tone symbols are written above and below the consonants. Up to four characters can be written together before moving on toward the right.
Example 2: Unicode
Accented characters can be displayed two ways in Unicode: You can write the umlaut character (U+00E4) or you can write an A and then add the umlaut dots (U+0061 and U+0308) above the A. The character U+0308 does not need its own horizontal space.
