Documentation
Definition
This field indicates whether or not the employee is required to contribute to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) or Quebec Pension Plan (QPP). The indicators for this field are as follows:
- 0 - Employee is less than 18 years old
- 1 - Tax and accumulate taxable wages
- 2 - Exempt from CPP/QPP
As payroll is run at the end of every payroll period, the system will continue to check the employee's age and, if needed, will change the indicator accordingly - for example, if an employee becomes 18 years of age, or if an employee working outside of Quebec becomes 65 years of age.
Under the Employment Insurance Act, employers are required to collect pension premiums, where applicable, and remit these to the respective government authority. The premiums remitted in this manner subsequently determine the amount to which retired or disabled employees are entitled, once they begin to draw CPP/QPP benefits.
