Definition

Variable, that is, quantity-dependent cost, that derives from using this production data structure. The variable portion of the costs, which results from staging the components, is contained in this parameter.

Use

This parameter is used for the scheduling heuristic in PP/DS. If there is a shortage of a product, the system first determines all possible sources of supply. Sources include transportation lanes, production process models, and production data structures. These are sorted according to their costs. The system first checks the source of supply with the lowest costs. If the product can be taken from this source on time, the system terminates the search. If this is not possible, the system checks for the source with the next highest costs.
