Definition
When a product is first uploaded, a new material is created in the OLTP System on the basis of the transferred product data. The material is assigned the material number given here. If internal number assignment is used for the material, the material number is not available until the product has been uploaded successfully.
Each time the product is uploaded subsequently to the same OLTP System, the system knows which material number to use, irrespective of whether the material number was assigned internally or not.
Normally you will try to derive the material number from the product ID. This can be done if the product ID was restricted to a maximum of 18 characters in the Customizing step Define Output Format and Storage Form of Product IDs. If this is not the case and you have a product ID with more than 18 characters, internal number assignment must be used to determine the material number.
Provided the Save lexicographically indicator has not been set in the Customizing step Define Output Format and Storage Form of Product IDs, the product ID is padded internally with leading zeros up to 40 characters and stored right-justified. This product ID is used to determine an 18-character right-justified material number, which is zero filled.
