Specifying the higher-level cost object ID in the cost object master enables you to create a cost object hierarchy.
Dependencies
Linking cost object IDs in this way enables you to analyze costs incurred for the cost object hierarchy and calculate production variances for this cost object hierarchy.
Remember that the hierarchy is only complete if the highest cost object node has an asterisk (*) in this field.
