Definition

Name of the ABAP/4 Dictionary object that is to be displayed, changed, or created.

Procedure

If you want to display or change an existing object, but do not know the name of the object, use the possible entries help or the ABAP/4 Repository Information System to search for the name.

Notes

Naming conventions

  • Length of name

The maximum length of the name of an ABAP/4 Dictionary object is 30 characters. The characters permitted are letters, numbers, and underscore. The name must start with a letter. Underscores should not be either the second or third character.

Matchcode objects: The name may only consist of 4 characters.

Lock objects: Lock object names must begin with an "E".

A list of names that you cannot use because they are used in the database system or because of SAA conventions, is provided in the ABAP/4 Dictionary in the section Reserved Names and Customer Names, or in table TRESE.

  • Customer name options

Customers can only create ABAP/4 Dictionary objects under names not used by SAP. This ensures that customer objects are not overwritten as the result of an upgrade. The documentation for the ABAP/4 Dictionary, section "Reserved Names and Customer Names", contains an overview of customer name options.
