Definition

The special unit of measure is a unit of measure which you use, in addition to the primary unit of measure, for specifying goods quantities. Specifying a quantity in the special unit of measure is only necessary if the national nomenclatures of goods for foreign trade statistics require a further unit of measure in addition to the primary unit of measure (usually kilogram).

Use

The special unit of measure is used for creating statistics on cross-border trade. For example, you specify this unit of measure in intra-European Union trade statistics (INTRASTAT).

Example

In Germany, you specify right angle grinders with commodity code 8508 80 51 not only in KG (kilograms) but also in the special unit of measure ST (Stück = piece).
