Putaway strategy K is a strategy whereby a material is stored in a reserve storage bin near the fixed picking bin of this material.

Putaway stragegy K creates a destination storage bin in a reserve storage area that serves as a goods buffer for a fixed bin storage area (reference storage type). Although the fixed bin storage areas form spatial units, they are defined as different storage types.

Using the storage type control function, you can set the system so that it attempts a putaway in the fixed bin storage area (strategy F) first. If this attempt is unsuccessful, then it attempts the reserve storage area (strategy K). Putaway strategy K itself only includes the reserve storage area in its search and does not check whether a putaway can take place in the fixed bin of the material in the fixed bin storage area.

Using the storage bin coordinates of the fixed bin, the system searches for an empty bin in the immediate vicinity in the reserve storage area. Putaway strategy K only functions for a reserve storage area that is assigned to a fixed bin storage area and for materials in whose material master a fixed bin is defined. If this entry does not exist in the material master, the system will terminate the search in this storage type, depending on a particular parameter (indicator whether putaway without fixed bin is allowed), or the system will search further for a destination storage bin in this storage type using strategy L.
The system searches preferably for an empty bin in the stack where the fixed bin is located; afterwards, it searches in the neighboring stacks of the same shelf, and finally in the shelf opposite in the same aisle. After this, the system searches in the neighboring aisles. The sequence of levels is always in ascending order (that is, from the bottom to the top). In the case of stock putaway strategy K, the system also uses the storage section search and the storage bin type search.
To make the search strategy more precise, you can use parameters to limit the search width (= distance from the fixed bin in numbers of storage bins) for each level and the maximum number of storage bins in the storage type occupied by the material.

Example

Requirements

Although a fixed bin storage area and a reserve storage area are defined as 2 different storage types, they form a spatial unit. Strategy K stipulates, therefore, that the existing conditions for both storage types are the same.
The coordinate structure of the storage bins in both storage types must be the same and the sequence of the storage bins must also fit. This means, for example, that storage bins that are above one another in the fixed bin storage area and the reserve storage area must have the same values in the shelf and stack, and must have different values in the level. The storage bin coordinates for the shelf and the stack that are created from the storage bin must be numeric.

Standard settings

Recommendation

Activities

  1. Decide whether you want to use this putaway strategy.
  2. In the detailed screen of the storage type control, activate the stock putaway strategy.
  3. Define the additional storage type control for this strategy. In the additional storage type control, you can enter the following settings:
    • Coordinate structure of storage bin (shelf, stack, Ebene)
    • Reference storage type (fixed bin storage type) for reserve storage type
    • Indicator whether material without fixed bin is allowed in the reserve storage area
    • Indicator whether number of reserve storage bins is limited per material
    • Maximum number of storage bins of a material in the reserve storage type
  4. Define the search width per level

To optimize the stock putaway, you can limit the search width, that is, the reserve storage bin must not be further away from the fixed bin than a certain distance. If the system cannot find any reserve bins on the basis of the search width defined, the goods can be placed into another storage type in accordance with the storage type control data.
This search width is set in connection with the warehouse number, the storage type, and the level, that is, for each level, you set an allowed search width with respect to the stack distance. If there is no entry for a level, then there is no limit for this level. If such an entry exists, the reserve storage bin must only be in the same shelf as the fixed bin.

The search width is seen as the stack distance from the reserve bin to the fixed bin. If the stack of the fixed bin has the value f, the allowed value area of the stacks has the value f for search width 0 (that is, one stack), value f minus 1 if the search value is 1, and f and f plus 1 (that is, three stacks), and so on.
If you want to limit the search width, enter the search width in the table for the warehouse number, the storage type, and level.

  5. Assign the shelves to the aisles

The leading coordinate of the storage bin can be assigned either as a sehelf number or an aisle number. If the aisle number is represented, the shelf (right or left side of the aisle) cannot be determined and the entire aisle is viewed logically as a shelf.
If the shelf number is represented, the search strategy requires the assignment of the shelves to an aisle since the system will preferably search for the reserve storage bin in the aisle of the fixed bin. You can enter the respective aisle for the key for warehouse number, storage type, and shelf. If there is no assignment to the shelf, the leading coordinate is interpreted as aisle number.

  6. Generate the storage bins

In the function screen "Storage bin structure for automatic creation", the system proposes for the reserve storage type the coordinate structure from the control data in strategy K.

  7. Checking the consistency of the settings you have made.

    The following settings are checked:

    • Has stock putaway strategy K been set for the reserve storage area?
    • Are the control data for strategy K defined for the reserve storage area?
    • Is the reference storage type set in the control data of strategy K?
    • Is the coordinate structure for the storage bin set in the control data of strategy K?
    • Is stock putaway strategy F set as putaway strategy in the reference storage type?
    • Are the storage bins created in the reserve storage area?
    • For each storage bin in the reserve storage area:

-> Are the coordinates for shelf and stack set?

-> Do the coordinates for the shelf and stack only contain numeric characters?

    • Are the storage bins created in the reference storage type?
    • For each storage bin in the reference storage type:

-> Are the coordinates for shelf and stack created?

-> Do the coordinates for shelf and stack contain only numeric characters?
