In this section, you define number ranges (intervals) for automatically generated objects of the IDoc interface. Without number ranges, the system cannot generate the appropriate objects. The number range 01 must be defined for each object.

This concerns the following objects:

Number range object     Description

EDIDOC     IDocs always generated

    when sending or receiving

    messages. IDocs correspond

    to the application documents.

EDIPORT     Ports generated

    automatically by ALE services.

EDIMAILBAG     Mailbags generated in communication

    with an R/2 System. The

    IDocs are also identified via

    these mailbags (one mailbag

    per transmission).

As, in production operation, there are considerably more IDocs than ports (each message sent to a customer via an IDoc interface corresponds to one IDoc!), the interval for EDIDOC must be accordingly larger. The same applies to EDIMAILBAG (many transmissions!).

SAP recommends that for IDocs the interval should begin with 100 in order to avoid 'margin effects' for small IDoc numbers.

Activities

  1. For EDIDOC and EDIPORT, carry out the appropriate action. The initial screen for number range object maintenance appears. The relevant object name is already entered as the default. For EDIMAILBAG, change the default name for one of these actions.
  2. Choose Goto -> Number ranges, Interval -> Display . For the number range 01, limits (From numbers and To numbers) must be entered. For object EDIDOC the From number should be 100, the To number should be selected as high as possible. If you want to change the interval, continue as follows:
  3. Go back and choose Interval -> Change. If there is not yet a number range 01, also choose Edit -> Insert interval.
  4. Define the number range 01 using From number and To number.
  5. Choose Interval -> Check to check whether your entry has any errors.
  6. Save your entry.

Notes on transport

Number range objects can be transported as follows:

  1. From the initial screen for number range object maintenance, choose Goto -> Number ranges.
  2. The choose Interval -> Transport.

Note that, in the target system, first all intervals of the chosen number range object are deleted, so that after the import only the exported intervals remain. The existing numbers are imported with the value that they have at the time of the export.

Dependent tables are not transported nor converted.
