To use the unit-of-production method of depreciation, you enter a total number of units for an asset and (for each depreciation posting period) the actual quantity produced. You make these entries for the depreciation key defined for unit-of-production depreciation. The system determines the amount of depreciation based on these two values and the APC or the net book value. A depreciation key is based on units of production if its base method uses a unit-of-production depreciation calculation method (either "No. of units/Total no. of units" or "No. of units/remaining units").
In this section, you specify the number of units for the depreciation keys for unit-of-production depreciation.
Note
During the transfer of legacy data, you have the option of having the system recalculate accumulated past depreciation. If you use this option and also use depreciation keys for unit-of-production depreciation, you have to enter the numbers of units for the time period beginning with the acquisition date of the oldest asset, up to the time of the legacy data transfer.
Requirements
You must have defined Depreciation keys for unit-of-production depreciation (that is, either "No. of units/Total no. of units" or "No. of units/remaining units" as the depreciation calculation method in the base method used).
Caution
When you define a depreciation key for unit-of-production depreciation, be aware of the following: If you use a base method that uses the the "No. of units/remaining units" depreciation calculation method, you have to use base value 27 (net book value with proportional value adjustments).
Standard settings
SAP supplies an appropriate depreciation key (STCK) as an example. This depreciation key uses a base method with unit-of-production depreciation.
Activities
Define the unit specifications for your depreciation keys for unit-of-production depreciation:
- Total number of units with which the assets are to be depreciated
The total number of units can be changed in any period. The new total number of units then applies for depreciation calculation starting with the period that was changed.
- Number of units which was depreciated (output) in the individual periods
