Costing variants contain control parameters for all aspects of costing.
The costing variant forms the link between the application and Customizing, since cost estimates are created and saved with reference to a costing variant.
The costing variant controls how costing is executed, such as:
- Whether the costing results are planned costs or actual costs
- Which prices are used to valuate materials, internal activities, and external activities
- How overhead is calculated
A costing variant includes the following groups of settings:
- Costing type
- Valuation variant
- Number range assignment
Note
Although it is technically possible to have two costing variants with the same costing type and valuation variant, this should be avoided to prevent data from being overwritten.
The reason for this is that the key structure for the costing results in the database uses the costing type and the valuation variant, rather than the costing variant.
Standard settings
The standard system contains a number of predefined costing variants.
SAP recommendation
You should assign a different valuation variant to each costing variant with which you intend to save cost estimates.
This one-to-one assignment enables you to change the valuation strategies later as required.
Actions
- Enter an alphanumeric key and a name for the costing variant.
- In the detail screen, assign a costing type and a valuation variant to a costing variant.
If you want to use your own parameters, you must process Define costing types and Define valuation variants.
- If the costing variant is used for a base object cost estimate, you define whether the costing types are to be assigned to the costing items. For all other reference objects in unit costing, the costs have to be totalled by cost element.
- If the costing variant is used for product costing, you define:
- Whether the costing results are saved
- Whether a unit cost estimate is used for a specific assembly
- Whether cost components should be entered manually
- How error messages are displayed for a cost estimate
- How you want the system to search for valid alternatives to create the quantity structure
Further notes
You require the costing variant for costing (costing variant plan) and for cost calculation (costing variant actual) for networks or operations.
You specify the following:
- You specify the costing variants planned and actual as a default value for using the Implementation Guide of the Project System with the network parameters for the network type.
- You specify the costing variants planned and actual in the application in the extras for the network header if there was no costing variant stored in the network parameters.
Choose the header data for the network via Goto -> Network header -> Extras.
If you are using unit costing at the cost operation or material component, you must specify the corresponding costing variants in the section Default Costing Variants for Cost Estimate for Network.
