Materials that are usually available in large quantities and therefore require a lot of storage space are often stored in bulk storage areas. In bulk storage, each row of the bulk storage area represents a single storage bin. In this type of storage bin, a quant is stored. The system can deduce how many storage units (for example, pallets) are in each bin from the ratio for quantity per storage unit type defined in the material master. For this reason, it is only possible to manage, at most, one partial pallet quantity in addition to the full storage units.
To ensure smooth processing, bulk storage areas do not allow:
- mixed storage
- storage of different storage unit types
When setting the parameters for storage type control, you should bear the following in mind:
- A capacity check in the storage type is not required because this check takes place automatically via the maximum number of storage units.
- It is not absolutely necessary to activate the storage unit type check:
- o If you require more than 10 bin types per storage unit type, you must not activate this check. The check is executed automatically via the definition of the bulk storage area.
- o If 10 bin types per storage unit type are sufficient, you should activate the check (gives you better performance).
Standard settings
In the SAP standard system, warehouse number 001 and storage type 004 are preset for the strategy "Bulk storage".
Recommendation
All the hints on setting parameters contained in this section only refer to bulk storage without Storage Unit Management. If you intend to set up the bulk storage area with Storage Unit Management, refer to the chapter "Storage Units - Strategy - Bulk storage".
Activities
- Decide whether or not you want to use this stock placement strategy.
- Activate the stock placement strategy in the detail screen for storage type control.
- Define the storage type control for bulk storage.
- Define the bulk storage indicators. For this purpose, refer to the instructions in the chapter "Define bulk storage indicators".
- Block/row structures
You define blocks/rows by setting the number of stacks and the stack height. The system then calculates the maximum number of storage units as the product of these two values. You can reduce this maximum number if required.
