In this menu option, you define the item categories that define the characteristics and functions of a component. You assign the item categories to the component when you enter the component items in the process order.

The item category also determines screen selection and the screen structure of the component detail screens.

From the point of view of the process order, the item category defines

  • whether entry of material is required
  • whether this is an item with inventory management on a quantity basis
  • whether an item is simply a text item
  • whether individual sizes have to be entered for the item
  • which quantity signs are provided

Note

  • You cannot use item categories that are planned for plant maintenance structural elements or for documents.
  • The item category is the same category that is used in the BOM and which is also primarily maintained here.

Default settings

The standard delivery of the SAP System contains the following item categories:

  • Document item (not in the process order)
  • Stock item
  • Text item
  • Non-stock item
  • Variable-size item
  • Intramaterial
  • Plant maintenance structural element (not in the process order)

Activities

Define new item categories if necessary.
