Each product category has to have a product category ID. This ID can be assigned according to a numbering scheme. The IDs of the lower-level categories contain the ID of the higher-level category as a prefix, and differ in the digits following the prefix.
For example:
- 01 Printers
- 0101 Monochrome printers
- * 010101 Wire matrix printers
- 0102 Color printers
- 02 Hard disks
As a result, the structure of the hierarchy is coded by the category IDs, making it possible, for example, to easily select subtrees in the hierarchy. In the above example, all monochrome printers can be selected as 0101*.
Note that when a numbering scheme is used, the highest category in the hierarchy (root category) does not have a category ID (field is set to blank).
In this activity, you define a numbering scheme. You decide on the maximum number of levels the hierarchy is to contain and specify how many digits are assigned at each level.
Example
Requirements
You have decided on the structure of the category hierarchy, that is, its depth and the maximum number of lower-level categories for each higher-level category.

Recommendation
Activities
To create a new numbering scheme:
- Choose New entries.
- Enter a number scheme ID and description, save your data and choose Back.
- Select your entry, choose Define numbering scheme levels and then New entries, and specify the number of digits allowed at each hierarchy level.
- Save your data.
After creating a numbering scheme, you can assign it to a category hierarchy, where you can define whether the IDs are assigned automatically or manually.
Note
Once a numbering scheme has been assigned to a category hierarchy, you can only change the numbering scheme description.
