The number assignment customizing defines within which number range intervals a product ID can or cannot be assigned.
The number assignment customizing is used:
- When products or objects are created (for example, within the transaction for maintaining products or creating an installed base).
- When products are transferred to the CRM/EBP System or MDM System by data transfer and this system is specified as the original system of these products.
Specifics in CRM
The number assignment customizing is not used when products are created as the result of a download from an SAP System. When this type of download is performed using the middleware, the SAP System is assigned to the products as the original system (that is, the logical system (LOGSYS) of the original system). The material or service master numbers are transferred from the SAP System without being checked against the number range intervals.
Background
Product master management does not require the product ID to be unique. It is possible, for example, that products that happen to have the same product ID are imported from various systems. The end user has to distinguish between these products using their descriptions, for example, or other data.
However, the combination of product type (for example, material or service), product ID, and original system, or product type, product ID, original system, and object family if you are working with objects, is always unique.
Further notes
You may want to prevent a product ID that has already been assigned to another product with the same product type from being entered using the product maintenance transaction. To do this, you assign the message 002 'Product &1 already exists for product type &1' the message type E (Error) in the Customizing activity Define System Message Characteristics.
