Fast access of individual data objects in the archive, such as documents and orders, requires an index (similar to fast access of database tables).
Some archiving objects provide their own solution (see the archiving object documentation for more information). For archiving objects that do not provide a solution, you can use the Archive Information System (SAP AS) to access individual objects.
Own solutions (archive index)
Whether an archiving objects provides its own index solution can usually be determined in archive Customizing. If the "Create index" check box is displayed, the archiving objects has its own solution. You can then use this indicator to specify whether an archive index is to be created. If the indicator is selected, the delete program usually creates the index. An index can be added later, if you did not select the indicator until after the first archiving sessions were processed.
Archive Information System (SAP AS)
You can use the Archive Information System (SAP AS) for all archiving objects (except for HR objects). The "Create index" indicator in archive Customizing does not affect the AS as the SAP AS has its own Customizing, which you can use to specify for which archiving objects information structures are to be generated (among other activities). The AS and the archiving objects' index solutions can co-exist in the system.
We do not recommend you develop your own index concepts. Use the SAP AS instead.
