External batch number assignment is not allowed for material type &1

Diagnosis
You want to create a batch for a material with material type and have not entered a batch number. In Customizing, you have defined for this material type that batch numbers cannot be assigned externally.
Procedure
You can either change the Customizing setting for material type to allow batch numbers to be assigned externally, or you do not enter a batch number and instead let the system assign the batch number automatically.
