Definition

This indicator determines whether the sequence number for a year is assigned separately to each edition or for all editions during automatic issue numbering.

  • If the indicator is selected, the sequence number in the year is assigned separately for this particular edition.
  • If the indicator is not selected, all editions of the publication for which the indicator is not selected are numbered sequentially for the year.

Please note the following:

Basic rules for automatic issue numbering

Automatic numbering can either be performed using the numbering program for all issues or during collective issue processing. (Manual numbering is also possible during collective or single issue processing.)

You can specify for each edition whether automatic numbering is to be performed separately for that edition or for all editions in a publication (numbering for all editions is then only performed for those that are not to be processed separately).

Note: If you perform numbering for all editions, every overview of issues that does not contain all editions to be numbered together can show gaps between sequence numbers. (This applies particularly to collective issue processing for the edition.)

Assignment of the sequence number for a year

Automatic numbering for editions that are not weeklies (i.e. daily newspapers, monthly magazines) is based on the individual period date for the issues. Here the individual period date always has the same meaning as the calendar year (for example, the individual period date for monthly magazines is always the 1st of that particular month).

Automatic numbering for weeklies is based on the year number for issues because the individual period date is not always the same as the calendar year (for example, the Monday in the first calendar week in a year can belong to the previous year). However, if the year number is not maintained for this edition, weeklies are also numbered on the basis of the individual period date.

Editions are classified as weeklies, monthlies or daily newspapers according to the frequency rule. Editions that have no frequency rule (whose issues are all created manually) are numbered on the basis of the individual period date. The individual period date for these issues must be set in accordance with the assignment of the issue to the calendar year when the issues are created manually.

Settings to note for numbering

  • If substitutions are defined in the mix type definition for the editions, you should number all editions in a publication together.
  • For weeklies, please ensure that the base year number is maintained in the edition data.
  • If you create issues manually, the individual period date or the year number for the issue must be assigned to the correct calendar year.

Special features when numbering editions together

  • When numbering all editions for a publication together, we recommend that you number them on the same basis (individual period date or year number). This happens automatically if all editions in a publication have the same frequency rule.
  • It is not advisable to group editions that do not have a common numbering basis (for example weeklies and dailies - although there are other reasons why this kind of grouping makes no sense). However, if you still want to group editions for numbering that have different numbering bases, you may need to rework the results of automatic numbering manually, since doing this may have unexpected results.
