Definition
Specifies the date which is to be determined on the basis of a baseline date, a time period and, possibly, a calendar ID.
Use
Date rules are always used when determining a date field is dependent on another date field.
Example
You have set up a contract with a customer for the use and maintenance of a photocopier. The contract is to run for one year after the photocopier is installed at the customer location. You want indirect date determination to determine the contract end date so you enter the following data:
Date rule = 11 Installation date plus one year
Baseline date = 05 Installation date
Time period = One year
As soon as the installation date is entered for the contract, the contract end date is determined on the basis of the above data.
Use
You can define date rules for all dates relevant for a contract.

Examples
from SD:
Use
Date rules are always used if another date field is needed to determine the date field.
Example
??? When you rent photocopiers, the contract start date for the rental contract is based on the installation date, which means that the contract start depends on the installation date. Therefore it makes sense to save a rule for the contract start date that proposes the contract start date from the installation date.

The following is copied from the relevant IMG module:
The basis of the rule for determining dates is a baseline date (e.g. today's date, validity period start date) to which a defining time period is added.
The rules for determining dates can be defined based on the following data:
- The possible baseline date is proposed from a specific value set (for example, today's date validity period start date), which cannot be changed.
- You can define the time period as required by specifying a figure with the relevant time unit.
- If you use a calendar ID for defining a rule, the system determines the next possible working day in the calendar after the baseline date.
If you use a calendar ID, you must NOT specify a time period.
Example
A rule for determining the date has
- today's date
- time period: 6 and
- time unit: months
as a baseline date.
Using 15 June 1997 as the baseline date, the system determines the 15 December 1997 as the date.
