Definition

The options in the group field 'Characteristic combinations' determine whether in the planning layout only the transaction data is offered for selection in the planning package, or whether all possible combinations are determined from the Customizing of characteristic relationships and offered for planning. The following settings are possible:

• Generate from transaction data (default setting):
  The transaction data is presented in manual planning, which belongs to the current selection. When you access the planning, you only see the characteristic combinations, for which plan values was already entered. If necessary, you create new combinations below the presented values and subsequently let them be sorted. You can also enter new combinations for the characteristics in the header area of the planning layout (in the value area of the current selection).
• Propose from possible characteristic combinations:
  You can define characteristic relationships in the planning area; in particular you can determine which characteristic combinations are posssible. For this reason, the system can determine all the characteristic combinations for the characteristics in the planning layout. The system proposes these combinations for the chararacteristics in the header area and for the chararacteristics in the lead columns. The static shares in the planning layout remain unchanged; this affects the data columns and the rows fixed in the layout. The combinations for which no values were entered, have the value 0 for every key figure. Because all possible combinations were generated by the system, it is not possible to enter further combinations within the selection.
  If no characteristic relationships are defined then the master data is determined for every characteristic with the selection of manual planning. The quantity of the characteristic values multiplied with each other from the selection (Cartesian product) is then the quantity of valid characteristic combinations.

Note: You should use the second option carefully. In particular you should make sure that the selection is so restrictive that the system generates a suitable quantity of characteristic combinations for manual planning.
