Definition
The tracking number should uniquely identify a parcel and the shipper account number.
The express delivery company dictates the format of the tracking number. Normally, the last digit is a caluclated checking digit in an attempt to avoid scanning errors and confusion with other bar-coded numbers. Some express delivery companies assign the number range that includes this number.
Other information such as shipper account number, route information and service codes is also included in the tracking number.
