Definition

The Online database server allocates various shared memory segements. These segments are divided into various classes consisting of Resident, Virtual and Message.

Resident shared memory is used for data buffers, tablespaces and so on.

The Message segments are used for communication.

The virtual segments are used for specific tasks for supporting individual users.

NOTE: Virtual shared memory is added dynamically as needed.

NOTE: The Informix Onstat commands give a total for the shared memory segments in the header of each option available. That total does not include the size of the shared memory message segment.
