An Application Identifier (AI) defines the length of a specified data field within a bar code type.
Example
Within the bar code type UCC/EAN128, the AI "00" defines a storage unit number with a length of 18.
This would make it possible to read the storage unit number from a bar code that is made up of a combination of fields.
