Definition
Internationally standardized number that uniquely identifies a material.
Use
This number always refers to a particular unit of measure or type of packaging.
The EAN (International Article Number) is generally assigned by the manufacturer of the material. In this case, the EAN also identifies the manufacturer uniquely.
A company can also assign an EAN using various "in-store" numbering techniques. An instore-EAN is known only to the company.
The equivalent of the EAN in America is the UPC (Universal Product Code).
In the RIS, these key figures are added from the various applications and in this case the EAN corresponds to the base unit of measure.
