If the field is a key field, it contains the sequence number of the record, provided dependent next records exist.

In the first record, the field is always blank.

In the second record, the field displays '2 '.

In the third record, the field displays '3 ' and so on.

If the field is not a key field, it contains the sequence number of the next record which is used to read the next record.
