Definition

Estimated fraction of nonconforming units in the population. A unit is nonconforming if it has at least one defect or if it does not conform to the specifications of a characteristic.

The fraction of nonconforming units is a number between 0 and 1. For ease of understanding, the system displays this number as a percentage value between 0% and 100% or in ppm (parts per million).

Example

The shares 10 ppm, 0.001%, and 0.00001 only differ in terms of their notation. The values are the same.

Use

The way the system determines the fraction of nonconforming units depends on the statistical model or the control chart type. The following variants are possible:

  • Calculating the fraction of nonconforming units as a quotient of the nonconforming units and inspected units
  • Estimating the fraction of nonconforming units outside of the tolerance range using the mean value and standard deviation under the presumption of a normal distribution of the original values
  • Estimating the fraction of nonconforming units with defects using the number of nonconformities under the presumption of a Poisson distribution of the defects
