Definition

Acceptable quality level (AQL)

The maximum share of nonconforming units in percent or maximum number of defects in every 100 units that represent the upper limit for satisfactory quality in an acceptance sampling inspection.

Use

The AQL can be used to group sampling instructions in a sampling scheme. In this context, it is an integral part of the standardized AQL sampling systems ISO 2859-1 and ISO 3951. If you use a sampling scheme with AQL values, you must select an AQL in the sampling procedure.

In contractual negotiations between the consumer and the vendor, the agreement of an AQL allows the detailed extent of the quality inspection to be quantified.
