Definition
Specifies the item category of this item of the HU proposal.
The following item categories are possible:
- 'A' load carrier item
The load carrier is the main packing material of a handling unit. For example, a crate or pallet. Each load carrier later becomes a handling unit.
- 'B' auxiliary packing material item
Additional packing materials, such as covers or intermediate layers.
- 'C' packed goods item
The material that is packed, for example, a crankshaft.
- 'T' text item
Long texts that, for example, describe a packing procedure verbally. Text items are only displayed in the HU proposal if they were defined in the packing instruction. Text items are only relevant for the packing instruction and HU proposal and are not copied to the actual handling unit .
You cannot create text items in the HU proposal.
- 'Z' unpacked material item
The system automatically creates an unpacked material item for each material that is to be packed, but is not yet completely packed in the HU porposal. The quantity not yet packed is specified in the 'Total quantity' field.
Items of this category cannot be changed or deleted manually.

The system determines the item category automatically from the material master data and the settings in Customizing for Packing. However, you can change the item category manually.
The system uses the following logic to determine the item category:
- If the 'Packaging material type' field in the material master is blank, the system assigns the material item category 'C' (packed goods)
- If the 'Packaging material type' field in the material master contains an entry, the system assigns item category
- 'A' (load carrier), if the packaging material category entered in Customizing for the packaging material type is 'A' or 'C'
- 'B' (auxiliary packaging material) if the packaging material category entered in Customizing for the packaging material type is 'B' or 'D'
