Definition
Indicates the state of the staff member's research activities in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
You must enter in this field a valid code other than the default code, if any of the Activity Code fields (24, 27, 30) in the Contract table is assigned to code 2A and the member of staff is not classed as atypical.
Note
You use codes 1 and 2 where the member of staff's hiring date at the institution is on the 2008 RAE census date (October 31, 2007) and their employment fulfilled the criteria to be included as category A or C and the staff member is not an atypical member. Category A and C includes staff employed on a teaching only basis.
You can also use code 02 for staff members not selected for assessment as part of their 2008 RAE submission. You can also assign these staff members to the appropriate unit of assessment in the UOA field.
You use code 3 when any of the activity code fields (24, 27, 30) in the Contract table has the code 2A and the member of staff did not fall within the definition of category A or C. This includes most research assistants and teaching assistants. You should not use this code for those staff who meet the definition of category A or C, but were not selected for assessment. In this case, you can use code 2.
You use code 9 for non-atypical staff with code 2A in any of the activity code fields (24, 27, 30) in the contract table and were not employed at the RAE census date.
You also use code 9 for all staff members whose hiring date is not October 31, 2007. This includes all staff members who were first employed by the institution during the 2008 or 2009 reporting year.
You use the default code X when all of the activity code fields (24, 27, 30) in the Contract table have codes 1, 2B, 3A, 3B, 3C, 4A, 4B, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or XX and also for atypical staff including those coded 2A in any of the activity code fields (24, 27, 30).
